Starr strays from Kenya and meets up with her childhood best friend Khalil (Algee Smith). Kenya notices a girl outside who's been talking trash about her, so she expects Starr to back her up in a fight, but Starr refuses to get involved. Starr attends a party in Garden Heights with Seven's sister Kenya (Dominique Fishback), whom Starr sometimes can't stand. Starr acknowledges that she and Chris get looks from the white girls who are too scared to say anything due to their interracial relationship. He comes to her at school to apologize and show off his corny dance moves.

She is dating Chris (KJ Apa), who just recently tried to have sex with Starr when she wasn't ready. Starr feels that she can't be "too ghetto" with her Williamson friends, but not "too preppy" around her Garden Heights friends. Starr attends Williamson, a prep school in a rich, mostly white area. While gang violence is prevalent, there are places like Maverick's grocery store and other shops that thrive. The Carters live in the mostly poor, predominantly black neighborhood of Garden Heights. Maverick was once part of the most violent gang in the neighborhood, the King Lords, but he has since left that life behind. Present Day in the early 2010s Starr (Amandla Stenberg) is Maverick's daughter who lives with him, her mother Lisa (Regina Hall), her older half-brother Seven (Lamar Johnson) and younger brother Sekani (TJ Wright). Maverick then hands them Black Panther ten step programs.

Patriarch Maverick (Russell Hornsby) gives his three children instructions on what to do in the event that he or they are ever pulled over by police, but to also not be ashamed of their identities as black children. The film opens with the Carter family seated at the kitchen table.The synopsis below may give away important plot points. Having to keep this secret weighs on Starr, as does her need to keep her Williamson and Garden Heights personas separate. Starr's identity as the witness is initially kept secret from just about everyone outside Starr's family - leaving Starr's two best friends, Hailey Grant and Maya Yang, and Starr's white boyfriend, Chris, who all attend Williamson Prep together, all unaware of Starr's connection to the news story. Khalil's death becomes a major national news story. The officer, thinking Khalil picked up a gun, fires three shots into Khalil, killing him. The officer has Khalil, who is black, exit the car while outside the car, Khalil reaches inside his car via the open driver-side window to check in on Starr, and picks up a brush. On the way home, they are stopped by a white police officer. After a gun goes off at a party Starr is attending one weekend, Starr is driven home by her childhood best friend, Khalil. Starr Carter is a 16-year-old black girl who lives in the fictional, mostly poor black neighborhood of Garden Heights, but attends an affluent, predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep.
